COVID is forcing Hardware Asset Management into operational and digital transformation

Tipping Point – “the moment of critical mass, the threshold, the boiling point.”– Malcom Gladwell, The Tipping Point

As we near the end of a year that will be forever studied in history books, I’ve been reflecting on not only how business has changed this year, but how it will need to continue to adjust to new requirements the pandemic brings in order to succeed. It’s never been more important for companies to recognize we’re at a crucial tipping point for how we need to think about and change the way we do business moving forward. With offices closing and employees working remotely, the need for digital and automated solutions, along with an increase in agility has become essential for companies to continue working.

A recent Gartner article states, “Remote work and the shift to the cloud will continue to drive infrastructure trends over the next 12 to 18 months,” and estimates, “By the end of 2023, more than 90% of infrastructure and operations (I&O) organizations will have the majority of their staff working remotely.”

Covid has changed the future of how we do business, permanently.

Hardware Asset Management needs to automate

IT departments now have to solve challenges like how to automate their current ITAM solution remotely, getting or retiring assets from various locations and figuring out how to responsibly dispose of assets with PID or classified information without raising security threats, all while trying to remain focused on their core business. Companies need to start making these changes immediately to ensure they have a hardware asset management system that addresses these challenges and delivers reliable data they can use to make sound decisions moving forward. A solution that’s automated, easy to use and delivers accurate data is crucial.

In the Salesforce study, “State of Service, 4th Edition” they found:

  • 74% of decision makers say they’re more reliant on data than before the pandemic
  • Less than 50% of mobile workers say their organization excels at inventory and asset management
  • 81% of decision makers say they’re accelerating digital initiatives

Those are big numbers requiring bigger changes. Companies are faced with having to make the courageous decision to break from the status quo and adopt a more agile and digitized solution in order to be able to focus on their business instead of their hardware logistics. Melissa Ries, Vice President, IT Transformation for ServiceNow says, “By embracing new technology and digital, automated processes, ITAM managers can position their organizations to not only survive in any economy but also be a driving force in innovation and business growth.”

I wrote earlier this year about What’s next for ITAM in the pandemic, and moving to digital processes and technology, plus planning for workforce challenges were key.
